Our Innovation

Both a cornerstone of the industrial revolution and a leading light in cutting edge modern technology, Leeds has an impressive history of innovation and imagination.

As a result, the city’s global reputation as a standard bearer in key sectors is continuing to grow and it’s those sectors that will drive the evolution of 21st century Leeds. Already the largest centre for knowledge-based industries and financial services outside London, Leeds is the base for some of the best and most innovative companies and researchers from the UK and beyond. The city is also a world leader in big data: home to the Open Data Institute and Data Mill North, as well as the Leeds Institute for Data Analytics.

Pivotal to this current and future growth has been the establishment of the Leeds Innovation District, bringing together universities, Leeds Teaching Hospitals and the Council, combining their extensive knowledge to accelerate economic growth across the city. This trailblazing project represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to improve the northern district of the city, connecting important developments by our universities, civic improvements by Leeds City Council and the redevelopment of the Leeds General Infirmary site.

With a focus on health innovation, engineering, financial and business services, data analytics and digital technologies, the district will mix commercial, educational, residential, student accommodation, cultural, arts and leisure. This will be bolstered by a number of key Leeds Teaching Hospitals specialisms already based within the Leeds Innovation District, including cardiovascular medicine, a major research theme for University of Leeds, major trauma and one of the largest children’s hospitals in the UK. The city is also a leading centre for transplants and the UK’s only centre for hand transplantation.

The wider Leeds City Region hosts more than 250 businesses specialising in medical technologies including more than 50 in Leeds, complemented by more than 200 digital and technology businesses operating in the health and social care space. The Leeds City Region Science and Innovation Audit and the Industrial Strategy highlight some of the exciting opportunities in the city’s knowledge economy.
