Our Waterfront

Once the lifeblood of trade industry in Leeds, the city’s historic waterfront is undergoing a striking transformation, becoming a world leading destination for business, leisure and tourism.

A cornerstone of the ambitious South Bank regeneration, the waterfront will be revitalised by a series of vibrant and eye-catching public spaces that will give visitors the chance to enjoy the area in a completely new way. Developers have already spotted the potential of the waterfront, with the award-winning Granary Wharf regeneration scheme featuring 300 apartments, the Candle House and the Hilton Hotel with its famous Skylounge Bar commanding stunning views of the surrounding area.

Investment in the waterfront has also come from leading names including Allied London and Sky at Leeds Dock, creating a world-class technology hub alongside the internationally renowned Royal Armouries Museum. The newly-unveiled Leeds Waterfront Enhancement Fund, put forward by the Leeds Chamber of Commerce, will fund ideas and activities that will enhance the waterfront and help the area achieve its cultural and economic potential as the city’s largest natural asset.

Key to driving footfall to these activities will be state-of-the-art transport links to the rest of the city centre, with the waterfront becoming a central feature of the new station district, complete with seamless pedestrian and cycle links across and along the river. To secure the waterfront for future generations, the Leeds Flood Alleviation Scheme led by Leeds City Council in partnership with the Environment Agency has also seen £50m worth of investment in cutting edge flood defences.

Together, these development will unlock the waterfront and bring the emerging regeneration south of the river together with the already thriving city centre.
